It is easy to see the resemblance between the BMII figures (left and above) and the BMIII Motif 1 Reduced Type 1 (below). They both display a triangular head directly attached to a pair of appendages (wings). Or wait - is the BMII figure actually exhibiting two half heads?

Basketmaker II Precursors of Motif 1, Joined Form
Three methods of joining figures are represented in the BMII artifacts illustrated here. The first method, shown in both the basket and the sandal, involves connecting two three-tiered figures, one upright and one inverted, by their bases. The second and thirds methods are shown only in the sandal. The second method involves connecting the central joined figure, by means of two short horizontal base lines, to the two joined half-figures on the right and left sides. The third method involves connecting, within each of the four zigzag rows, the three full and two half two-tiered figures by the use of four short horizontal base lines.

These figures, with their frames of stepped triangles, are displayed as isolated panels. The basket probably had four panels originally.
