MOTIF 9: Overview
Motif 9 consists of multiple parallel short lines. Usually, these lines are attached to one or both sides of a base line, at angles of roughly 45 or 90 degrees. The base line may be a single centerline, or one side of a polygon.
Even when the short lines are not attached to a base line (i.e. floating), they are still parallel to each other. They may or may not be contained within a polygon.
An exception to the parallel "rule" is an uncommon third form, comprised of one base line with two short lines attached at roughly 45 degrees on the right and left sides, respectively, of the base line. This form resembles the three-fingered hands shown in Motif 1 New Mexico site 29SJ299.
Over 100 examples of Motif 9 are in the data base. Most (91) are attached to base lines, 17 are floating and five are possible hands.
